WHEN DOES HUMAN LIFE BEGIN?

An Unpublished Letter to Los Angeles Times

Let's cut through all the connecting issues and get to the heart of the matter in abortion: When does human life begin?

Just as brain death is legally recognized as human death, brain life should be legally recognized as human life.

According to at least one of the top neuroscientists in the world (Times, 8/17/85), it is not until the 28th week of pregnancy that the fetal brain develops the capacities for truly human -- I say, soul-searching -- thought, feeling, and awareness.

Therefore, terminating a pregnancy after the 7th month is killing a brain-alive baby -- who has an inalienable right to life -- but terminating a pregnancy before the 7th month is aborting the not-yet-brain-alive fetus (or embryo) of a pregnant woman -- who has an equally inalienable right to choose what she will or will not subject her body to.

Like it or not, in the absence of better evidence to the contrary, we just have to accept this as another fact of life.
